CMMI Associate Retired — What CMMI Practitioner Certification Requires Now
The CMMI Associate credential was retired by the CMMI Institute in June 2026 with no bridge path to Practitioner — appraisal team members from earlier cycles must complete the current CMMI Practitioner training to serve again.
What changed
The Associate exam is no longer offered, and the two course tracks that led to it — Foundations of Capability + Building Development Excellence, and Foundations of Capability + Building Service Excellence — have been withdrawn. Associate can no longer be earned, and no provider can prepare candidates for it.
The current path: CMMI Practitioner
Building Organizational Capability (BOC) is the official three-day, instructor-led CMMI Practitioner course, covering all eight CMMI domains. It is followed by the CMMI Practitioner examination. Passing confers the ISACA CMMI Practitioner credential.
As a CMMI Practitioner you hold Authorization to Attend Benchmark Appraisals (ATM) across all CMMI domains — including development, services, supplier management, security, safety, people management, and data — rather than the single-domain scope Associate carried. BOC is delivered online or on-site.
If you held a CMMI Associate credential
Complete BOC and pass the CMMI Practitioner examination. Because Associate was retired with no bridge path, there is no abbreviated route and no credit for prior learning.
